CBS has released the public's first glimpse of the re-tooled (Ha! That never gets old) version of "Two and a Half Men," which now stars Ashton Kutcher instead of Charlie Sheen. "All will be revealed 9/19/11, " it jokes/promises, and Jon Cryer's character doesn't seem too happy about what's going to be revealed:

Apparently, the plan is to use the sign these men (and half-man) are holding as a template for future messages, something bloggers are already having fun with. What can we learn about the new version of the show, in which Kutcher's character is rumored to buy Charlie Harper's house after Charlie's death? Pretty much only that the show will continue to be sexually suggestive in a way that's creepy and gross to TV critics and delightfully hilarious to Americans with Nielsen boxes.

Phone-hacking: Dangers lurk for David Cameron

When bloodless coups come about in dictatorships, often it's when the head of government is away on a foreign visit.

But democracies bring their own dangers for absent political leaders.

If David Cameron had not trekked to Africa, he may as well have hired the vast illuminated advertising space in Piccadilly Circus and adorned it with the legend "government in crisis -official".

But no sooner had he departed than some of his own leading backbenchers were whispering that it looked like he was running away.

Chancellor George Osborne was meant to address the restless membership of the influential 1922 committee of backbench MPs on Monday, but the meeting was scrapped - with members settling for nothing less than an encounter with the prime minister himself on Wednesday.

Labour has been on the front foot, but for that very reason restlessness might not turn to revolt as the Conservatives see the logic in closing ranks.
Febrile atmosphere

But a previous Conservative prime minister, Harold Macmillan, was right to warn of the hazards of "events, dear boy".

It might not take much for some backbenchers to change their view that, grudgingly, David Cameron is an asset - to seeing him as a potential liability.

The outgoing Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson has already taken a pop at the prime minister and may do so again at the Home Affairs Select Committee later.

When the Murdochs and Rebekah Brooks go before the culture, media and sport committee, some members will be intent on asking questions about Andy Coulson, David Cameron's former communications director, in an attempt to bring the crisis closer to the door of number 10.

Now the febrile atmosphere may dissipate.

But as David Cameron touches down on Tuesday evening, he will find that the bookies are taking bets that he will be gone -permanently - by the weekend.

Far fetched nonsense of course - but a few weeks ago the loss of the country's senior police officer, the resignation of the chief executive of a major newspaper group, the closure of the bestselling Sunday tabloid, and the death of a whistleblower in the hacking scandal would have seemed unthinkable.

So those disgruntled Tory backbenchers will be hoping the prime minister can swiftly get off the back foot.

Sean Hoare death: Whistle-blower post-mortem to be held

A post-mortem examination will be held later into the death of a man police believe to be former News of the World (NoW) journalist Sean Hoare.

Police say his death is unexplained but is not being treated as suspicious, and his next of kin have been informed.

Mr Hoare, 47, who had claimed phone hacking was rife at the NoW, was found dead at his home in Watford on Monday.

He had also told the BBC's Panorama programme that phone hacking was "endemic" at the Sunday tabloid.

When he first spoke out, Mr Hoare told Panorama the then NoW editor Andy Coulson had asked him to hack phones - something Mr Coulson has denied.

The former journalist was also interviewed by the New York Times last year in which he said hacking was far more extensive than the NoW acknowledged when police first investigated hacking claims in 2006.

Hertfordshire Police said in a statement: "Police investigations continue into the unexplained death of a man who, whilst formal identification is yet to take place, police believe to be Sean Hoare.

"The post-mortem is set to take place today. The man's next of kin have been informed and the family are being supported by police at this sad time."

Mr Hoare's body was discovered after police were called to his home in Langley Road, Watford at 1040 BST on Monday.

The showbiz journalist had worked on the Sun before being recruited by former NoW editor Andy Coulson to News International's Sunday title.

Israel troops board Gaza protest boat Dignite-al Karama

Israeli commandos have boarded a boat trying to breach Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, the military says.

The Dignite-al Karama, the sole representative of an initial 10-vessel flotilla, had earlier been surrounded by warships and warned to change course.

A military spokeswoman told AFP news agency the boat was being towed towards the Israeli port of Ashdod.

She said the operation to board it had been conducted peacefully.

The Dignite-al Karama is part of Freedom Flotilla II, which has been trying to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza since the end of June. Flotilla organisers say despite the opening of Gaza's Egyptian border, the territory remains under "unlawful blockade" by the Israelis.

In an earlier statement, the Israeli military said the aid could be delivered without breaching the blockade.

"The Israel navy notified the Al Karama that it is on a route leading to an area under a maritime security blockade off the coast of Gaza, and reminded them any supplies they may have on board may be transferred, legally, through the existing land crossings and the Ashdod port," the statement said.
'No contact'

Protest organiser Julien Rivoire said at least three warships had surrounded the boat and communications had been jammed.

Speaking to AFP from Paris on Tuesday morning, Mr Rivoire said the French-flagged Dignite-al Karama had been stopped about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza.

"We can't get in touch with them by phone or by Internet," he said.

The activists' Twitter account said the navy asked for their location and they gave it to them. They said four navy ships were following the boat - three flanking their vessel on the left and one on the right.

One activist tweeted that the military had threatened to board the boat if it did not head away from the blockade.
Greek ban

On Monday, Thomas Sommer-Houdeville, a French activist on board the Dignite-al Karam told AFP the boat was only carrying a "symbolic message of peace and hope and love" and Israel had no reason to intercept it.

"We hope that they will not, we don't have a plan but we have a peaceful humanitarian mission. We are a peaceful boat flying a French flag."

Freedom Flotilla II said a ban on flotilla boats leaving Greek ports had stopped many of its vessels sailing. The Greek government said the ban was intended to protect activists.

Earlier this month, the captain of flotilla vessel The Audacity of Hope was arrested in the Greek port of Perama and charged with trying to leave port without permission and of endangering the lives of passengers.

In 2010, nine Turkish activists were killed when Israeli commandos stormed the lead ship of the first Freedom Flotilla, causing an international outcry.

As a result, Israel eased its blockade on Gaza, which it says is necessary to stop weapons smuggling and put pressure on Hamas.

It increased sanctions on the impoverished Palestinian territory in 2006 after militants captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Israel tightened them further still a year later when Hamas ousted rival Palestinian organisation Fatah from the territory.

Although the Islamist group won Palestinian legislative elections in January 2006, it refuses to recognise Israel or to renounce violence and is designated in the West as a terror organisation.

Man City manager Mancini expects Aguero developments

Manchester City are closing in on a deal to sign Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero, BBC Sport understands.

The move comes despite the deadlock in Carlos Tevez's proposed move to Brazilian outfit Corinthians.

The Tevez transfer is on hold after the Brazilian side contradicted City boss Roberto Mancini's claim that a deal had been agreed.

But City are confident they can beat Juventus and Real Madrid to sign his Argentina team-mate Aguero.

Mancini's original plan was to wait until the Tevez deal was concluded before moving for Aguero and Corinthians need to move quickly to complete the transfer before the Brazilian window closes on 20 July.

Corinthians said in a statement that City "have asked for changes in the form of payment and on the value of the transfer" that would finally see Tevez leave after a protracted transfer saga.

City officials are privately frustrated by the delay - but BBC Sport understands they are satisfied they are making good progress in negotiations with Atletico that would see Aguero, 23, arrive as an instant and ready-made replacement for his fellow countryman.

It is believed the only change requested to the offer accepted by City for Tevez, which was £38.6m - 40m Euros plus 4m Euros in add-ons - was a minor detail in the first instalment of payment and did not relate to the value of the deal.

City are also not requesting any sell-on clause in the deal, despite reducing their original asking price to give Tevez his wish to be reunited with his family in South America.

Aguero has made it clear he expects to leave Atletico in the coming weeks and City are confident they can beat off competition from Europe's leading clubs to sign one of Europe's most coveted young talents.

He scored 20 goals in La Liga for Atletico last season, and has scored 13 international goals for Argentina in his 30 appearances.

This year’s Gay Sports Day takes place on Bank Holiday Monday August 29th in Vauxhall Spring Gardens, London.

Teams are being invited to register now for the activity-filled day, the proceeds of which will go to gay charity GMFA.

Matthew Hodson, head of programmes at GMFA, said: “Sports Day is all about fun, celebration and giving back to the community. We’re expecting regular teams from previous years as well as plenty of new faces, all competing for glory.

There are three prizes – for the teams that win the most events, raise the most money or come in the best fancy dress.

Last month, prime minister David Cameron mentioned the annual event, which has been running since the 1980s.

National transgender festival Sparkle kicks off

The national transgender festival, Sparkle, has begun in Manchester.

The festival, now in its seventh year, is the biggest event on the trans calendar and is billed as a “celebration of gender diversity”.

Tonight’s schedule includes a launch party at AXM, a banquet meal and a comedy evening.

The main event, to be held in Sackville Gardens tomorrow, will be ‘Sparkle in the Park’, with stalls and performances.

Equalities minister Lynne Featherstone will open the event with a speech at 1pm.

On Sunday, visitors can enjoy a lunch, church service, closing meal and a workshop on the government’s Transgender Action Plan.

Interview: It’s more than OK to be George Takei

For many, George Takei will always be Sulu, the helmsman he immortalised in the science-fiction series Star Trek. But the veteran actor has forged a long and diverse career incorporating stage, television, radio and film. He has been involved in civil rights movements for just as long. Laurence Watts met him at his Hollywood home.

“He called and asked me to come in for a table reading of the script.” That’s how George describes getting the part of Dr Matsutani in the film Larry Crowne. The caller in question was Tom Hanks. Julia Roberts would also star in the film. “I’ve reached the point where I get invited to play certain roles, rather than lining up and waiting to audition.”

George’s childhood was much less auspicious. Though he and his parents were American-born US citizens living in Los Angeles they were imprisoned along with other Japanese-Americans during the Second World War. George was five years old when, in April 1942, his family was sent to the Rohwer War Relocation Center in Arkansas for internment.

“It was one of the most egregious violations of our constitution,” he tells me. “There were no charges, no trials and no due process. We were imprisoned simply because we looked like the people who bombed Pearl Harbour.”

Internment didn’t just mean barbed wire, armed guards and sentry towers; it also meant loss of livelihood. Businesses and homes were lost as well as freedom.

“Before, my father had a cleaning shop,” George tells me. “Well, when you’re given 48 hours to leave you lose that. He sold his car for $5 because it was better than leaving it idle. We sold my mother’s brand new refrigerator for $1.”

Even when the war was over life remained difficult. When he was released, despite his college degree, Takei’s father worked as a dishwasher in a Chinatown restaurant. Other Asians were the only people who would hire him and that was the only job available.

By the time George went to college his family was back on its feet. He began studying architecture, but it wasn’t long before he wanted to follow his true passion: theatre. When he raised the matter his father pointed to the likely roles he believed his son would be offered: servants, buffoons, students and villains. That’s what he saw on television and what he thought his son could look forward to.

“And I said, ‘Daddy, I’m going to change the industry. I’m going to study acting. None of the people playing those roles have studied theatre. It’s because we’re portrayed as those stereotypes that it was so easy for the government to round us up and put us in camps’.”

In a partial victory his father dissuaded him from attending The Actors Studio in New York, in favour of a course at UCLA that would at least earn a degree. As luck would have it Daddy knew best: Takei was seen in a student production at UCLA by a casting director from Warner Bros studios and put into his very first feature film, 1960’s Ice Palace, starring Richard Burton. A slew of film and TV work followed, but it was his casting as Sulu in 1965 that Takei describes as his “breakthrough opportunity”.

“A lot of the roles I’d played up to then were accent roles. Gene Roddenberry explained to me how the Starship Enterprise was a metaphor for Earth and how the ship’s strength was the crew’s diversity. At that time we were at war in Vietnam and people ‘like me’ were once again characterised as the enemy. There was my image as Sulu, a member of this diverse multinational team, chipping away at that old stereotype at the same time.”

Though Takei has played many roles over the years, including recently in NBC’s ‘Heroes’, Nickelodeon’s ‘Super Ninjas’ and appearing in Britain’s ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!’ it’s his role of Sulu that has taken on a life of its own after 51 episodes, 22 animated episodes and six feature films.

“I do Star Trek conventions, but I try to be selective. I think it’s good manners to go out there and thank the people who have blessed you with such long-lasting popularity.”

When George publicly came out in 2005 he was already 18 years into a relationship. He and his partner Brad had met as members of a gay running group.

“In 2005 the Californian Senate and Assembly passed a bill legalising same-sex marriage. All that was required for it to become law was the signature of the governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. When he ran for governor he courted the gay vote saying, ‘I’m from Hollywood, I’ve worked with gays and lesbians, some of my best friends are gay.’ But when it came to it he played to the reactionary section of his Republican base. He vetoed the bill.

“I spoke to the press for the first time about being gay to highlight Schwarzenegger’s hypocrisy. Of course we didn’t know just how hypocritical he was until after he left office, but that’s why I did it. I felt my voice had to be authentic.”

A few years later the California Supreme Court took the issue out of politicians’ hands when it legalised gay marriage on 15 May 2008.

“We knew a ruling was coming and so Brad and I had the news on all the time. We were having lunch as a matter of fact, when there was breaking news. I’d been planning on asking him, but when the news came on CNN I had a mouthful of sandwich. Brad got down at that moment and said, ‘George would you marry me?’ I was like: ‘Darn it! You beat me to it!’”

They were married on September 14th 2008 at the Japanese-American National Museum in Los Angeles, a museum Takei co-founded to share the Japanese-American story. Less than two months later Proposition 8 was voted into law, banning same-sex marriage in California.

“Brad and I were at ABC’s television studios to be interviewed on the Obama victory, but at the same time we got the news about Prop 8. I said it was a bittersweet night for us. It was amazing that America had elected an African-American as president, but at the same time it was personally devastating.”

George and Brad’s marriage was one of the 18,000 same-sex marriages thrown into legal limbo by Prop 8. Though the validity of their marriage was later upheld by a further court ruling, Takei has since used his visibility as a prominent out gay man to become a strong advocate for LGBT rights. One recent example of this is the ‘It’s OK to be Takei’ campaign.

In May 2011, when Tennessee senators proposed and passed a bill that would make talking about homosexuality in schools illegal, Takei hit back with a tongue-in-cheek internet campaign showing how ridiculous the measure was: if teachers couldn’t say ‘gay’ he was happy for them to say ‘Takei’ instead.

“In this country we have the first amendment, which guarantees free speech. You can’t muzzle people, particularly teachers who give guidance to teenagers. Politicians trying to make a law punishing people with 30 days in jail for using a certain word is outrageous.”

A million YouTube hits later and with its backers looking like laughing stocks the bill now looks to be indefinitely stalled. It’s a solid victory and proof, if proof were needed, that it’s more than just OK to be George Takei.

Opera writer may take legal action over council’s ‘defamatory’ statements

The author of a community opera cancelled after a gay row says he may take legal action over “defamatory” comments made by the council.

Lee Hall, who wrote Billy Elliot, told the Guardian that while he was happy that the project was now back on course, he wanted East Riding of Yorkshire council to completely retract a statement in which it claimed the script featured a paedophile.

An earlier statement by the council’s head of improvement and learning, Mike Furbank, said that “of particular concern and offence was a character who groomed and abused children in his early days in Ibiza”.

The council quietly retracted the comments but Mr Hall says it must go further. He said the work, which has a gay man as the protagonist, has never featured a paedophile character.

Mr Hall told the newspaper that the school and the council had started a “campaign of misinformation” to cover up their bad decisions and accused them of damaging his professional reputation.

In the row, Emma Hobbs, the head of Bay Primary School in Bridlington, which had 300 pupils involved in the work, complained about scenes involving the gay character, saying she needed to protect children.

Mr Hall responded by accusing the school of homophobia.

The year-long project, commissioned by Opera North on public money, looked set to be scrapped completely.

However, reports this morning said that the July 15th performance will go ahead after a compromise was reached.

The contentious scenes lines were originally: “Of course I’m queer/That’s why I left here/So if you infer/That I prefer/A lad to a lass/And I’m working class/I’d have to concur.”

Mr Hall has now changed the lines to: “Of course I’m gay/That’s why I went away./So if you infer/That I prefer/A lad to a lass/And him working class/I’d have to concur.”

A joint statement from Ms Hobbes and Mr Furbank said: “We are delighted to announce that the revisions which the school requested have now been made and the author has addressed the points raised by the school.

“This has enabled the community opera, Beached, to continue. The final libretto is now an age appropriate text which was all the school had requested.

“The play retained the inclusion of a gay character, Professor Sewerby, who remains central to the play’s dramatic message.

“Neither the council, school or Opera North have ever expressed any concern over the inclusion of a gay character, only some of the language and tone around the character’s identity. The writer has now addressed this.

“Homophobia does not exist in any of our organisations and we take great exception to how this has been played out over the last week and we refute all such claims.

MP complains over anti-gay preacher’s UK visit

An MP has asked Home Secretary Theresa May why an anti-gay US preacher is being allowed into the UK.

Labour MP Richard Burden told the Birmingham Mail that people would question why Pastor John Hagee is allowed into the country while other hate preachers, such as Muslim speaker Sheikh Raed Salah, are banned.

Mr Burden was due to speak at an event with Mr Salah but the latter was arrested after arriving in the UK. He was supposed to have been banned from entering the UK after claims of anti-Semitism.

Mr Hagee, who calls himself a Christion-Zionist, has said in the past that the Holocaust was part of God’s plan to force Jews to return to Israel and that Hurricane Katrina was divine punishment for a gay Pride march.

He is due to speak at Birmingham Symphony Hall on August 19th, with two seminars the following day.

Mr Burden said: “It’s hard to understand why Raed Salah is banned from the UK while Pastor Hagee is welcomed despite his repulsive and bigoted views.

“I also wonder whether Symphony Hall knows what Pastor Hagee will be saying when he uses their premises.

“Many people might believe that he is entitled to freedom of speech, however offensive his opinions. But there is a difference between accepting his right to speak and actively helping him by providing premises.”

Chris Baldock, general manager of the Symphony Hall, told the newspaper: “We have a general open policy as regards all faith groups and have therefore accepted a booking from John Hagee Ministries.

“We have been made aware of the views expressed by individual members of the public and will be liaising with the organisers to discuss the matter further.”

A Home Office spokesman said he could not comment on individual cases. He said: “The Home Secretary will seek to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good. The government makes no apologies for refusing people access to the UK if we believe they might seek to undermine our society.”

Pride London in full swing as parade begins

London pride kicked off today with LGBT disability campaigner Kath Gillespie Sells leading the parade in a white convertible Corvette.

Also at the head of the parade were rugby player Ben Cohen and Peter Tatchell, who carried a placard denouncing BNP leader Nick Griffin.

Tatchell told PinkNews.co.uk: “Every year I do a satirical placard and it’s about time Nick Griffin was ridiculed. He’s a figure of fun with absurd political pretensions.”

Deputy Mayor of London Richard Barnes and Labour mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone also marched at the front, but were keeping some distance from each other after the former called the latter an ‘old retread’ in a PinkNews.co.uk interview last week.

Home Secretary Theresa May attended a reception before the march began but did not join the parade.

Labour MP Chris Bryant, Tory MP James Brokenshire, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber, Richard Barnes and Kath Gillespie Sells are all due to speak on the main stage in Trafalgar Square this afternoon.

As the parade passed a small group of Christian protesters, some marchers swapped their chant of ‘gay pride’ for ‘**** you’.

Other sights on the parade included the Liberal Democrat bus, which bore a sign reading: ‘Delivering gay marriage! (Then we can divorce the Tories)’.

Tory gay group says Ken Livingstone should be banned from Pride

The Conservative Party’s LGBT group, LGBTory, has called for mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone to banned from tomorrow’s London Pride over his alleged “close friendship” with an anti-gay extremist.

The group’s chairman, Matthew Sephton, accused Mr Livingstone of being a “hypocrite” who will “undermine the core values” of the event.

Mr Livingstone’s campaign responded with a string of criticisms against mayor Boris Johnson.

Mr Livingstone, who was mayor of London between 2000 and 2008, hopes to win the Labour nomination for the 2012 race. Yesterday, he wrote a comment for PinkNews.co.uk accusing the Tory-run City Hall of being “passive” and “directionless” on gay rights.

Deputy mayor Richard Barnes responded by calling Mr Livingstone an “old retread”.

Mr Sephton claimed that Mr Livingstone’s presenting work for Iran’s Press TV, his friendship with Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman and his support of Muslim cleric Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi – who has been accused of homophobia – make him unsuitable to join the march.

He said: “Mr Livingstone’s record on LGBT equality is shameful, proved time and time again by his close friendships with barbaric, anti-gay regimes and repugnant characters who believe homosexuality is not only a crime but that gay people should be killed.

“He should not be allowed to hi-jack and exploit this weekend’s parade and risk undermining core values of such Pride events unless he ditches his links with such regimes and unsavoury characters.”

In response, a spokesman for Mr Livingstone said: “It sounds like the nasty party is back – the Tories are worried that Boris Johnson has failed to deliver on LGBT issues, will not be turning up to the last Pride before the mayoral election, axed the annual Pride reception and took London government out of the Stonewall Equality Index.

‘Ken’s clear plan to put the pride back into London shows he is more in touch with Londoners who want to put London back on track whereas Conservative Boris Johnson has delivered nothing and failed to stand up for LGBT London in the face of Tory-led government cuts.”

Soho bomber David Copeland loses appeal over sentence

David Copeland, the Soho nailbomber who killed three people in 1999, has lost an appeal to have his sentence cut.

The 35-year-old, from Hampshire, set off three bombs over the course of two weeks designed to kill and seriously injure London’s gay, Asian and black communities.

Sixty-three people were injured by bombs he set off in Brick Lane and Brixton, but the final and most devastating incident took place in Soho, the heart of London’s gay scene.

In that attack, three people, including a pregnant woman, were killed and 79 were injured.

The bomber, who told police he was a neo-Nazi when arrested, was found guilty the following year of three murders and three offences of planting bombs.

He was handed six life sentences for the attacks. Originally, Copeland was told that he must serve a minimum of 30 years before he can be considered for parole.

In 2007, a judge increased that sentence to a minimum of 50 years.

Copeland attempted to appeal the decision but the Court of Appeal ruled this week to uphold it.

Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge said: “It is difficult to exaggerate the horror of these appalling crimes, which stemmed, as far as we can see, from the appellant’s abhorrent beliefs.

“Having reflected on this awful case, we have come to the conclusion that the appeal should be dismissed.”

FIFA criticises Nigeria’s football coach over ‘lesbian ban’

The governing body of football, FIFA, has criticised the coach of the Nigerian women’s football team for saying she had forced out lesbian players.

Last week, coach Eucharia Uche told the New York Times that since she was hired in 2009, she has eradicated homosexuality from the squad.

According to the newspaper, she said lesbianism was “morally very wrong” and “a dirty issue” and claimed that she had taken steps to stamp it out.

Tatjana Haenni, FIFA’s head of women’s competitions, told German television channel ARD: “FIFA is against all forms of discrimination.”

She added that FIFA would be speaking to Ms Uche about the remarks, AFP reports.

In Germany, where the women’s world cup is being held, the national Football Federation added:”Our association resolutely combats any kind of discrimination. This also includes the fight against homophobia.

“The current issue around the coach of the Nigerian national team certainly requires further discussion. But this can only be done by the tournament host, which is FIFA.”

Boris Johnson: ‘London should be the benchmark for LGBT equality’

London mayor Boris Johnson has called for London to be the “benchmark of LGBT equality’ ahead of tomorrow’s Pride march.

In a message to marchers, Mr Johnson said: “With just over a year to go to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, anticipation is building to one of the most thrilling years in London’s history. Over the next 12months we will be welcoming people from around the world and events like the Pride London celebrations illustrate in magnificent and colourful style that we know how to throw a party.

“It’s a festival that also underlines our city’s reputation as a place where you can be yourself, something we can be proud of. Pop stars, sports stars, academics, politicians – people at all levels and in all walks of life – including my own team – feel comfortable and confident to be out and to be themselves.

“I want London to be the benchmark for LGBT equality, which is why we must not be complacent, especially when it comes to homophobic hate crime and bullying. My office will continue to work with LGBT groups as well as the police to tackle a problem that still affects too many lives.

“Pride has an important role to play in this, with individuals able to come together for an important community celebration, as well as a great day out for all in the heart of the capital. So have fun this Saturday and celebrate all that London has to offer. Happy Pride!”

Mr Johnson will not be attending tomorrow’s event, as he has in previous years. Deputy mayor Richard Barnes is expected to lead the parade, along with disability campaigner Kath Gillespie-Sells, who will be the grand marshall, and rugby player Ben Cohen.

US pilot says sorry for anti-gay rant

A US pilot has apologised after a mid-flight homophobic rant was accidentally broadcast to air traffic control.

James Fritzen Taylor, who works for Southwest Airlines, was flying between Austin and San Diego in March when it is believed a button for the cockpit microphone was hit by mistake.

Air traffic controllers in the Houston area heard him complaining about cabin crew, calling them “f**king homosexuals” and grannies.

He was also heard referring to a gay flight attendant as a “fag” and calling Houston cabin crew members ugly and fat.

Last month, the story surfaced in the Houston Chronicle, which reported that Mr Taylor had been suspended without pay. He has now been reinstated.

The union representing Southwest Airlines flight attendants said it was considering filing a charge with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over the remarks.

Mr Taylor has now sent a written apology to Houston flight attendants, KPRC Local 2 reports.

“I deeply regret the derogatory remarks I made and the hurt I have caused. I take full responsibility for those comments,” he wrote.

“It was truly insensitive of me and I would like all of you to know that from now on, I will show nothing but my utmost respect during my interactions with all employees.”Please know that this event has forever changed me and I hope that others can learn from my mistakes.

“I have learned a much-needed lesson to be more sensitive of others and I hope you will see me as a more tolerant and considerate person.”

Disability campaigner Kath Gillespie-Sells to lead London Pride

LGBT disability campaigner Kath Gillespie-Sells is to lead London’s gay Pride parade tomorrow as the event’s first grand marshall.

The activist, who was honoured with an MBE last month, will lead the annual parade through the city centre.

The grand marshall role is an honour usually given in US pride events and this is the first time London Pride has had one.

Pride spokesman Colm Howard-Lloyd told PinkNews.co.uk: “We want to honour Kath for all the work she’s done to make Pride more accessible over the years.

“We want to make her the most important person in the parade.”

Ms Gillespie-Sells, who is the mother of The Feeling singer Dan Gillespie-Sells, became disabled when a splinter in her finger led to septicaemia.

She founded national LGBT disabled campaigning group Regard in 1990 after struggling to attend Pride events.

She was nominated for Hero of the Year at the 2010 Stonewall awards.

Also leading the parade will be rugby player Ben Cohen, who has begun a campaign against homophobia in sport, and London deputy mayor Richard Barnes.

Mayor Boris Johnson, who will not be attending, sent a message to marchers to “have fun this Saturday and celebrate all that London has to offer”.

A secret recording has emerged on YouTube in which Missouri congresswoman Vicky Hartzler is seen comparing gay marriage to incest, paedophilia and allowing three-year-olds to drive.

Ms Hartzler, a member of the Tea Party, was addressing a conference of college students at the Eagle Forum Collegians Summit in Washington on Thursday. She said that if same-sex marriages were allowed, it would lead to paedophiles and polygamists also being allowed to marry.

In the uncovered footage, Ms Hartzler says “Well, think about it . . . if you just cared about somebody, have a committed relationship, why not allow one man and two women or three women to marry?

“There are a lot of people in this country that support polygamy. Why not? They’re committed to each other. Why should you care? Why not allow group marriage? There are people out there who want that.”

She continued: “Well, is that the best policy? Why not allow an uncle to marry his niece? Why not allow a 50-year-old man to marry a 12-year-old girl if they love each other and they’re committed? So pretty soon if you don’t set parameters, you don’t have any.

“We’re saying marriage is between a man and a woman. It’s not a right in the Constitution as far as that goes either. It’s not a right of anybody to have a three-year-old to be able to drive a car. The government has [to] set some parameters.”

The Eagle Forum promotes conservatism on college campuses. Its annual conference is attended by around 200 students.

Ms Hartzler deemed the conference a success, writing on Twitter afterwards: “Spoke to almost 200 college students today at the Eagle Forum Collegiate Leadership Conference. A great group of sharp enthusiastic leaders.”

Mrs Hartzler was elected in 2010 to represent Missouri’s 4th Congressional District. She is an evangelical Christian and staunch opponent of gay marriage.

She is also a spokesman for the Coalition to Protect Marriage in Missouri, which successfully campaigned to ban same-sex marriage in the state.

CNN documentary reveals tragic consequences of ‘experimental therapy’ designed to make young boys ‘more masculine’

CNN are to screen a three-part documentary about a form of ‘experimental therapy’ designed to make ‘feminine’ boys more masculine.

The documentary, entitled The Sissy Boy Experiment, tells the story of Kirk Andrew Murphy who despite success in school, the Air Force and his subsequent career, took his own life in 2003 at the age of 38.

As CNN reveal, initial confusion as to why Murphy took his life led to the emergence of a dark secret.

According to his mother, Kaytee Murphy, he “played with girls’ toys”, and displayed “too many effeminate traits”.

She said it bothered her because she wanted her son to have “a normal life.”

Unluckily for the five-year-old Kirk, in 1970, a psychologist was advertising on local television recruiting boys for a government-funded programme at the University of California, Los Angeles. There, he was treated largely by George A. Rekers who instructed the boy’s parents in techniques for training their son in the “correct” way to act.

This included “therapy” including being denied all attention and affection by his mother if he played with the “wrong” toys and being rewarded for playing with the “right” ones i.e. plastic guns and handcuffs.

At home, Kirk was physically punished for displaying “effeminate” behavior.

Dr George Rekers later built a three-decade career as a leading national expert in preventing children from becoming gay, and as an anti-gay champion. He was also a founding member of the Family Research Council, a faith-based organisation that lobbies against gay rights issues.

His career came to end last year however, when he hired a male escort to accompany him on a trip to Europe. Rekers denied any sexual contact with the escort.

In 2009, Rekers co-authored a book entitled Handbook of Therapy for Unwanted Homosexual Attractions in which he cited Kirk’s Murphy’s case as a success.

When tracked down by CNN, Rekers told them that it was “inaccurate to assume” that the therapy led to Kirk Murphy’s suicide.

Even more shockingly have been surgical interventions carried out by US surgical staff on girls with intersex conditions such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Such intervention, which aims to “normalise” the individuals concerned, has led to operations carried out on the “over-sized” clitorises of girls as young as two years old, leaving them damaged and, in some cases, incapable of ever having a satisfactory sex life.

London hospitals to offer routine HIV tests to A&E patients

Two hospitals in London are to offer routine HIV tests to Accident and Emergency (A&E) patients, making them the first in the UK to do so and aiming to save lives by reducing the number of cases of undiagnosed HIV.

All patients aged 16-65 attending the A&E department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital are being offered the 30-second test, and more than 450 patients have been tested since the trial began earlier this year.

Testing is to start in the A&E department at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, on 20 June.

Currently, the NHS only offers routine HIV tests to pregnant women in antenatal clinics and patients in sexual health clinics.

The Health Protection Agency estimates that 86,500 people are living with HIV in the UK – 26 per cent of whom are unaware of their condition. In London, 28,000 people are living with the virus. Also, the number of people in the capital diagnosed with HIV acquired in the UK has doubled in the last decade.

Dr Ann Sullivan, Consultant Physician at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, said: “People whose HIV is undiagnosed are not only more likely to die from the virus but also infect other people while they are unaware of their condition. If diagnosed early, HIV can be successfully treated and people with HIV live to near-normal life expectancy.

“Our pilot study demonstrated that routine HIV tests in A&E not only detect undiagnosed cases but also are seen as acceptable by the vast majority of patients.”

Sir Nick Partridge, Chief Executive of HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust, said: “We welcome anything which increases testing for HIV and offers it in a way that’s safe and reliable.

“Thousands of people are still undiagnosed in the UK and the later people are diagnosed the more likely they are to get seriously ill and pass the infection onto others, so it’s vital we encourage people to come forward for HIV tests.”

New Elton John documentary to be screened by HBO in January

A documentary following the life and career of Sir Elton John will be screened on HBO in January 2012.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, HBO Documentary Films recently acquired domestic TV rights to the film which explores the musician’s early career as well as his collaboration with fellow singer-songwriter Leon Russel on their 2010 album The Union, which is also the film’s title.

The documentary was directed by Cameron Crowe and produced in collaboration with T-Bone Burnett and Michelle Panek and began filming in November 2009.

The film is described as “an extremely candid portrait of one of the world’s most treasured artists and performers, and his extraordinary journey of the heart – one that sent him to powerfully reclaim and reinvigorate the life and musical career of Russell, to whom John hadn’t spoken in over 38 years. The Union is a captivating and exhilarating real-life experience of musical creation and generosity.”

The Union had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City back in April.

Sir Elton won a Tony Award in 2000 for Best Original Musical Score on Aida. He has also been nominated for his work on The Lion King and Billy Elliot.

Three out of four Australians believe gay marriage will soon be a reality

Three out of four Australians believe same-sex marriage will be made legal in their country, a poll showed Wednesday, prompting gay activists to renew their fight to be able to marry.

The Galaxy poll, commissioned by lobby group Australian Marriage Equality and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, questioned 1,052 adults on the subject of gay marriage.

The pollsters said: “Three in four of Australians say that it is inevitable that eventually the law will change in Australia to allow same-sex couples to marry.”

National convener of Australian Marriage Equality, Alex Greenwich, said most Australians already supported gay marriage, and that this confirmed the public’s growing acceptance of reform.

Mr Greenwich told AFP: “Australians have had the discussion, they have had the conversation, and they are either supportive of it or have accepted that it will happen.”

He added that support for gay marriage had soared over the last ten years, now standing at around 62 per cent according to a 2010 Galaxy poll, compared with a 30 per cent support level in 2004.

Gay marriage is currently banned in Australia and opposed by both major political parties. But in November lawmakers agreed to consult the public over the issue, which was a key point during last year’s elections.

The left-wing Green Party, a significant partner in Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s minority coalition government, have requested a conscience vote on the issue, insisting there is wide public support for a change to the marriage laws.

Ms Gillard, who is herself unmarried but has a partner, has repeatedly said that she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Protestant pastor vows to fight against gay sauna in Londonderry

A Protestant fundamentalist pastor has said that he will take his protest against a gay sauna onto the streets of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, after it was given full planning permission this week.

The Cage, owned by Barry McGonagle, opened in February but was only granted planning approval for expansion this week.

However, Mark Bradford, from the city’s Bethnal Baptist church claimed the application submitted by the owner was misleading. He told the Belfast Telegraph’s Donna Deeney: “There is no mention in the application for a dark room, a cinema or private cubicles but this is what is being advertised.”

He added: “While I and other ministers have quietly gathered over 400 signatures on a petition protesting against this place, I will not rule out taking our protests to the streets now and I will not stop until this carbuncle is removed from the city.”

Mr McGonagle also spoke to the Belfast Telegraph, saying he had no intention of moving his premises: “I know this is a first for the city and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I wasn’t expecting one hundred per cent of the people to be happy but I will not let this deter me.

“The customers that have already been here have been very complimentary and are glad that something like this is in Derry for gay and bisexual men.

He added that although there was a similar place in Belfast, there was nothing comparable in the north west.

‘Gay girl in Damascus’ blogger feared kidnapped

Relatives of Amina Abdallah, author of the “Gay Girl in Damascus” blog, say she has been abducted.

Ms Abdallah, a 35-year-old English teacher whose candid blog has made her a prominent and admired figure in the Syrian uprising, was allegedly seen being bundled into a car by suspected security agents on Monday.

The disappearance of Ms Abdallah, who holds dual American and Syrian citizenship, has prompted Facebook and Twitter campaigns demanding her release.

A post on her website written by a woman saying she was Ms Abdallah’s cousin said the blogger had been grabbed by armed men on her way to a meeting.

Rania Ismail wrote: “Amina was seized by three men in their early 20s . . . one of the men then put his hand over Amina’s mouth and they hustled her into a red Dacia Logan.”

CNN News said that the claims made on the blog could not be verified and that attempts to contact Ms Abdallah’s family and officials in Damascus and at the Syrian embassy in London, have failed.

Ms Ismail wrote that Ms Abdallah, who in her blog has challenged taboos in Syria – a country where homosexuality is illegal but unofficially tolerated – had feared she may be abducted.

The blogger, who says she was born in Virginia to an American mother and Syrian father, last posted to her page on Monday.

Speaking to CNN last month, she said: “A whole lot of long-time changes are coming suddenly bubbling to the surface and views towards women, gay people and minorities are rapidly changing.”

Amnesty fights for Cameroonian man jailed for three years on charges of being gay

Thousands of Amnesty International supporters are appealing to the authorities in Cameroon for the immediate release of a man jailed for charges of “homosexuality and attempted homosexuality”.

Jean-Claude Roger Mbede was arrested in March by members of Cameroon’s security service while meeting an acquaintance. Prior to their meeting, the acquaintance had shown to the police text messages he had received from Mr Mbede.

Mr Mbede was then taken into custody on suspicion of being gay. He was held at the Gendarmerie du Lac detention centre in the capital, Yaoundé.

A week later he was charged with homosexuality and attempted homosexuality and transferred to Kondengui central prison on 9 March.

On 28 April, Mr Mbede was found guilty of the aforementioned charges and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

He is currently serving his sentence at Kondengui central prison where he is at risk of homophobic attacks from fellow inmates and prison staff owing to his sexual orientation, whether it is real or perceived.

Cameroon is an adamantly homophobic country and the arrests, prosecutions and trials of gay men occur regularly, say Amnesty International.

Section 347a of the Cameroonian penal code states: “Whoever has sexual relations with a person of the same sex shall be punished with imprisonment from six months to five years and with a fine ranging from 20,000 Francs CFA to 200,000 Francs CFA” (approximately £21 to £215).

This contravenes the international and regional human rights treaties (including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights) which Cameroon has signed and ratified.

Amnesty International’s LGBT Campaign Manager Clare Bracey said:

“Locking someone up for their real or perceived sexual orientation is a flagrant breach of basic rights and should not be allowed under any country’s penal code. Because of the state’s intolerance to homosexuality and the general social attitude, homophobia is rife in Cameroon and Amnesty International fears for the safety of Jean-Claude Roger Mbede while he is in prison.

“We’re urging the Cameroonian government to repeal this law under the penal code in accordance with its international human rights obligations, and to immediately and unconditionally release Mr Mbede.”

Prison conditions in Kondengui are harsh, with overcrowding, poor sanitation and inadequate food.

Unitarian minister in Kentucky refuses to sign marriage licences until gay couples are given marriage equality

A Unitarian minister in Kentucky has pledged that she will not sign any more marriage licences until the state makes same-sex marriages legal.

This came after the congregation at Reverend Dawn Cooley’s church – the First Unitarian Church in Old Louisville, Kentucky – voted on Sunday to not have their minister sign such licences “until Kentucky ceases to discriminate against same-sex couples with respect to civil marriage.”

Reverend Cooley, who wrote on her blog that although she would continue to perform religious marriage ceremonies for both gay and straight couples, she would not perform the civil function of signing marriage licences on behalf of the state.

Cooley said heterosexual couples have the option of having their marriage licence signed by a justice of the peace or “choose not to have their licences signed, and stand with gay and lesbian couples and not participate in civil marriage until it is a civil right.”

The organizer of Moscow Gay Pride parade was arrested by police who try to pressure him to give up organizing a demonstration against the mayor, said a colleague, Alexei Davydov, who denounced the use of "methods of the Gestapo."

Arrested on Wednesday at the airport of Domodedovo, near Moscow, where would embark Geneva, Nikolai Alekseev was taken to an unknown place, Davydov said the Echo Moscow radio.

A spokesman for the airport, Elena Galanova, denied the information saying that Alekseev was denied boarding because he refused to remove their shoes at security control.

According Davydov, Nikolai Alekseev, also founder of the site GayRussia.ru, sent text messages that mention pressures to withdraw a police complaint against the mayor of Moscow, Yuri Lujkov to ban the organization of the Gay Parade in the capital.

The US Federal Reserve bank’s decision to fly the gay pride rainbow flag outside the headquarters of the Richmond Federal Reserve in Virginia has sparked a row in the state, where homosexuality is still technically illegal.

The gay pride flag has been flown below the Stars and Stripes at outside the Federal Reserve in Virginia’s capital, Richmond.

State officials and politicians objected to the decision to fly the flag during June to show the organisation’s acceptance of diversity in the workplace.

Virginia state Delegate Robert G Marshall wrote that homosexuality “adds significantly to illness, increases health costs, promotes venereal diseases, and worsens the population imbalance relating to the number of workers supporting the beneficiaries of America’s Social Security and Medicare programs.”

“I do not believe that a celebration of ‘gay pride’ has anything to do with the mission of the Federal Reserve under the Federal Reserve Act passed by Congress.

“This is a celebration of a behaviour that is still a class six felony in Virginia. How can the American people trust the judgement of the Federal Reserve as an institution when its spokesperson celebrates an attack on public morals?”

Although Mr Marshall is correct in stating that homosexuality is illegal in Virginia, a 2003 US Supreme Court ruling found that anti-sodomy laws prohibiting private sexual acts between gay couples were unconstitutional. Virginia has not prosecuted anyone for sodomy since the ruling.

Sally Green, the bank’s vice president and chief operating officer, said: “We are flying the pride flag as an example of our commitment to the values of acceptance and inclusion.” The bank confirmed that it had no plans to cave into the demands of homophobic politicians.

Equality Virginia Executive Director James Parrish said: ‘The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond should receive accolades for its decision to recognize and celebrate its LGBT employees, customers and vendors during Pride month.”

Homophobic group flies aeroplane banner warning families about Disney’s Gay Day

Today sees the end of the annual Gay Days event at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. But just in-case people didn’t notice thousands of LGBT customers, a homophobic group hired a aeroplane to fly a banner over the area warning families.

The Florida Family Association contracted the plane on Friday and Saturday to fly a banner that read: “Warning Gay Day At Disney.”

In a statement it said: “Thanks to the generosity of many supporters, Florida Family Association contracted this aircraft company to fly a seven foot high banner for ten hours the day before and ten hours the day of Gay Pride Day at Disney World.”

“Florida Family Association wants to warn these families about this offensive event before they arrive at the Magic Kingdom on Saturday. This airplane banner is our best effort to accomplish that goal.”

The offensive behaviour that the group referred to included pro-gay t-shirrs, same sex couples hugging, holding hands, “groping each other” and some punters “dressed in drag.”

The event is in its 20th year and brings in around $150m to Disney, rival theme parks, hotel owners, restaurants, bars, clubs and other local businesses.

“The economy is improving because of what Gay Days bring into it,” Gay Day President Chris Alexander-Manley told a local tv station WDAM. “Our crowd behaves better than most convention crowds, so come on out and see what it’s really about.”

This weekend marks 30th anniversary of first HIV cases but ignorance is growing, say National AIDS Trust

This Sunday 5 June marks 30 years since the first cases of HIV.

Despite many successes in tackling the epidemic, more people than ever are living with HIV in the UK and a significant proportion of the British public still do not know the basic facts around HIV transmission according to the National AIDS Trust (NAT).

One in five people do not realise that HIV can be passed on through sex without a condom and, worryingly, knowledge of this fact has fallen by 11 per cent in the last decade.

Incredibly for 2011, one in ten people incorrectly believe HIV can be transmitted through impossible routes such as kissing (nine per cent) and spitting (10 per cent) and these figures have doubled since 2007 (from four and five per cent respectively).

Chief Executive of NAT, Deborah Jack, said: “Years of HIV is a huge milestone and in this time there have been great strides in HIV treatment, testing and care. However, as these advances have meant HIV is now a manageable long-term condition and not a death sentence, HIV has largely fallen off the political and public agenda, and knowledge has declined.

“There are now huge gaps in public awareness and understanding of HIV and a significant proportion of the British public are unaware of the basics – such as using a condom – and cannot distinguish between the facts and the myths.”

The 30th anniversary of HIV and these worrying statistics come just days ahead of a UN meeting in New York City where 26 heads of state will meet to discuss progress in tackling the epidemic.

The UK, along with various other countries worldwide, have signed a UN Declaration of Commitment on HIV and AIDS which commits to having a national strategy for combating HIV which addresses stigma, discrimination, human rights, prevention, care, treatment and support.

However, the UK will be attending the UN meeting in breach of international commitments and failing to meet best practice in addressing the epidemic: there is currently no national strategy on HIV in the UK.

NAT is calling on the Government to devise and implement a much-needed national strategy for HIV so that progress in responding to the HIV epidemic in the UK can be made.

Ms Jack said: “It is unacceptable that in 2011 – 30 years after the first cases of HIV – the number of new HIV diagnoses is double what it was 10 years ago, and people living with HIV still face stigma and discrimination. Without a national strategy to tackle these serious health and equality issues, HIV will continue to be silenced and sidelined in the UK. Strategic action will make the difference between progress and failure in the fight against HIV.”
